Select the Rectangular Marquee tool . |

Click and drag a box around the area of your image that you want to make into a transparent text panel. |

Choose Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Levels and click OK. |

Drag the black Output Level slider in the Levels dialog box to adjust the brightness of the text panel. Make sure the Preview box is checked so you can view your adjustment in the image window. When you achieve the desired amount of transparency, click OK. |

Select the Horizontal Type tool .
If you want to enter vertical type, select the Vertical Type tool instead.

In the options bar. make sure that the Create a Text Layer button is selected and select your type options. |

Click inside of the text panel, and enter type. |

Click the OK button in the options bar to commit the text. |
